OPEN SINGLES TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD

.The Christchurch Bowling Centre last evening decided to inaugurate an open singles tournament, to be conducted under the automatic two-life system. Mr P. Delargey, who made the suggestion, said that similar tournaments were held m Auckland and Wellington. Such a tournament in Christchurch would stimulate interest in the game, both among the public and players. Mr W. Jifford said that the tournament should not be looked on as a championship tournament, as the centre held an annual champion-of-champions singles contest.

In a report on the half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Association, Mr A. Dickson said notice of motion had been given to the annual meeting that where a player belonged to two or more clubs he would be obliged to declare to the seefetary of each club of which he was a member before October 15 each year, which club he intended to represent during the year.

Mr Dickson said that concern had been expressed at the meeting at the lack of experienced greenkeepers in New Zealand. It had been decided to make representations for provision to be made at Massey Agricultural College for greenkeepers to be trained.

The Canterbury Council of Sport advised that arrangements had been made £°L a representative of each sporting body affiliated to it to speak over the air and asked the centre for a nomination. It was left for the executive to arrange for a suitable speaker. The three fours championships had been won by the United Club, and the inter-club competition (Manning Cup) by Hornby. The present holders of badges in the Watson and Robinson shields are: Watson Shield—Section A: Shirley, C. Rowe (s); Section B: Sydenham, A. Besley (s.). Robinson Shield—Section A: New G. Davis (s); Section B: KaiaPpi W.M.C., D. Chaney (s).

CASHMERE CLUB In the final of the Cashmere Bowling Clubs pairs championship, W. Haigh and N. Laver beat L. Smith and S. H. Maddren.
