MODERNISED TEXT OF NEW TESTAMENT
(Rec. 9 p.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 10. A modernised text of the King James version of the New Testament, representing the work of 31 scholars, is now appearing in bookshops. Dean Luther Weigle, of Yale University Divinity School, who directed the project, explained that the revision had been undertaken because the King James version was sometimes erroneous and misleading, and because the Word of God was needed to-day. The Word must stand forth in clear and meaningful language. The Word must not be hidden in ancient phrases which had changed or lost their meaning. Dean Weigle said that in the new version such archaisms as thee, thou and thine were abandoned for modern forms except in language addressed to God. A revised version of the Old Testament would be ready in 1950.
