“We are tired of carrying bags and parcels, gardening, cooking, cleaning, sewing, doing without things we need while men want less work all the time,” says “Housewife,” who urges girls to ’’stick to their jobs," till men install in homes all labour-saving devices. “Take Heed” endorses C. T. William’s view that foodstuffs cannot be spared to feed racehorses or make beer in the face of “the approaching world famine.”
Recalling that Russia, Australian and Auckland watersiders, and the Christchurch Trades Council have been at one in condemning British policy in Greece and Indonesia, V. Williamson says, "Well, Mr Vyshinski has made his little effort with indifferent results, and it now appears to be the turn of the Trades CouncV’^an<i t ? e Foreign Affairs Department of the Sydney and Auckland waterfronts. In these days of coal, tobacco, matches, housing, wheat, and milk shortages, we badly need some amusement.”
W. Lane regrets the decision to take down clock towers such as those of Sydenham, Nelson, and Ashburton, but hopes the clocks may be set up again
Referring particularly to the use of barley in brewing, "F.A.S.” asks whether New Zealand is to "go down in history as a country that wallowed in luxury when the world was starving.”
