HIGHER WAGES FOR APPRENTICES

EXTRA COST TO TRAMWAY BOARD

The weekly wage of apprentices employed by the Christchurch Tramway Board has been increased on a p6rcentage basis by an amendment to the apprenticeship order under the Economic Stabilisation Emergency Regulations. The works and traffic committee’s report presented at the board's meeting yesterday stated that the increased cost of this amendment would be £9OO. Reference to the extra costs the board would have to meet was made by Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon. He said there bad been criticism by the public of the advertising on buses, which was done everywhere else, but the board expected at least £lOOO a year from the advertising, which would help to relieve the burdens that had been placed on it. The chairman (Mr H. Kitson) said it was difficult to understand the objections to advertising on the buses. It had been on the trams practically ever since there had been trams. The board was trying to explore every way in which it could get additional revenue.
