OBITUARY
HON. VINCENT WARD
The death occurred at Wellington on Saturday of the Hon. Vincent Aubrey Ward, C.B.E.i M.L.C.
Mr Ward was a son of the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, Bart, and was born at Bluff in 1888. He was educated at St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, and in 1905 he joined the staff of the Wellington branch of the National Bank of New Zealand. Two years later he went to England in the employ of James Morrison and Sons, merchants, and later joined the staff of Lloyds, London. Mr Ward then went to New York, where he took service with the United States Steel Company. In 1911 he was appointed joint manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Ltd., at Montreal. When the Great War broke out in 1914 Mr Ward enlisted in
the Canadian forces, in the following year was granted a commission, and from 1916 to 1918 he served with the Motor-boat Patrol in England. He was next appointed under the British Ministry of Shipping to a position in New York, returning to New Zealand in 1920, when he joined the firm of J. G. Ward and Company, Christchurch.
Mr Ward was elected a member of Parliament for the Invercargill electorate in 1930, and was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1934. He was a director of the British Standard Portland Cement Company, the Golden Bay Cement Company. Ltd., and chairman of the Southern Cross Assurance Company. He was appointed honorary secretary of the Wellington Patriotic Committee in September, 1940. and was living in Heretaunga, Wellington.
