jUrlborough Cup Beneve accounted for the bulk of the pool in the Marlborough Cup on Saturdav, but. with Racket, was always struggling a long way from Reto Parera. which gained a substantial advantage when a |iow early pace was quickened half a mile from home. Racket reduced the gap in the run home and easily beat the favourite, but had no chance with Roto parera. The winner is a five-year-old by Fexlight from Wet Paint, and is trained at Awapuni by J. J. Waller. Racket finished on resolutely, but had too much ground to make up. She will do better to-day.
X Poor Display Appeasement was hard ridden all the way in his engagement at Blenheim, but could not make any impression on the pair in front of him His stablemate. Deep Harmony, was on the course, but was not produced because the track was harder than expected. There is not likely to oe any change fcr to-day’s race. Trained at Masterton True Friend, winner of the Novice Stakes at Blenheim, is a four-year-old colt by Spiral from Relative and is trained at Opaki by T L. Jennings. His trainer also nominated his own filly. Gay Corrie, for the meeting, but this Coronach four-year-cld broke down the day before being booked to leave Masterton. Below Expectations Leighona. trained at Riccarton bv H. Nurse, for his Blenheim wner, Mr J. W Shirtcliffe. was expected to have a chanee in the Novice Stakes, but after being slow to move off she was always struggling near the rear. Another from Riccarton, Miss El terwater, trained by A. Stove, also failed to shew up in the same race.
A Smart Filly The four-year-old filly Royal Tor, owned by the Mayor of Kumara and president of the Kumara Racing Club, had an easy success, her fifth on end. in the Kumara Diamond Jubilee Handicap from Gunga Din. Ration was the pacemaker in the early stages, and when he retired Royal Tor and Gunga Din raced on terms. Thev were the only two in it, and though Gunga Din made a determind challenge. Royal Tor won without being extended by a length, with Trench Law three lengths behind Gunga Din. and Ration next. The winner was at short odds. The cup and nugget were presented to the owner after the race by the Hon. P. C. Webb, partowner of the runner-up, while the whip was also presented to the winning jockey. C. T. Wilson.
