CEYLON SHORT OF RICE

POSSIBILITY OF FAMINE (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 10. “The people of this island, whose rice rations have been twice cut and the flour ration halved in the last two months through ship delays, are living practically on ‘ship to mouth’ basis,” says Reuter’s Colombo correspondent. “The big question everyone is asking is, will Ceylon’s food mission to Britain succeed in view of the London statement of world grain shortages? “Flour is being eked out until the middle of this month when delayed shipments from Australia are expected. A famine can be averted only by a reduction of the consumption of rice to the barest minimum.”
