WAIPIATA SANATORIUM DAMAGED

FIRE IN MAIN MEN’S BLOCK (P.A.) DUNEDIN, Feb. 9. A serious outbreak of fire in the Waipiata Sanatorium to-day resulted in considerable damage being done to the main men’s dormitory block, which includes a sitting room kitchen, and bathrooms, with cubicles in either wing. The fire, the cause of which is unknown, was first noticed about 6.20 p.m. and patients were immediately evacuated without injury. The sanatorium staff, assisted by neighbouring farmers, attacked the fire, which had a good hold but an ample water supply and a fortunate absence of wind enabled them to confine the blaze to the centre of the block. An hour of strenuous work resulted in the fire being brought under control, but by that time the sitting room, with its furniture and billiards table, the kitchen, and bathrooms were futted. and the cubicle wings were afected by water. The Orangapai Post Office and storeroom. which were under one of the wings, were also damaged by water.
