SENIOR WOMEN’S GRADE
NORTH LINWOOD LEADER The meeting of the two previously unbeaten teams, North Linwood and Elmwood, was the feature of the senior women’s inter-club competition of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association at Wilding Park on Saturday afternoon. Miss M. Burrell, top player for Elmwqod, scored a win over Mrs Doris Dounithome. who is above her on the ranking list, but that was Elmwood’s only success, the team being without its usual second player, Mrs R. W. Austin. With one round to be played. North Linwood now has a clear lead in the competition. Results:— SENIOR WOMEN’S GRADE North Linwood v. Elmwood Singles—Mrs E. J. Donnithorne lost to Miss M. Burrell, 3-6. 4-6; Mrs I. J. Corich beat Miss M. Whiteside, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1: Miss S. Elsom beat Mrs G. Archer, 6-3. 6-4; Miss A. Hughes v. Mrs A. Cheyne, 0-6, 4-4 (unfinished). Doubles.—Mesdames Donnithorne and Corich beat Misses Burrell and Whiteside. 6-3, 6-1; Misses Elsom and Hughes beat Mesdames Archer and Cheyne, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. North Linwood won by 4 matches to 1. University v. Cathedral Singles—Miss I. Kitson beat Miss V. Flood. 6-4, 6-4; Miss P. Kitson lost to Miss J. Murray. 5-7, 3-6; Miss A. Peppier beat Miss O. White. 6-3, 6-3; Miss M. Newell (University), w.o. Doubles.—Misses I. and P. Kitson lost to Misses Flood and Murray, 5-7. 2-6: Misses Peppier and Newell beat Misses Murray and White, 6-4, 6-2. University won by 4 matches to 2. SECOND MIXED GRADE Avonside beat St. Paul’s. 9-7. Barrington beat Woolston. 11-5. Waimairi beat Spreydon. 92 games to 85. Edgeware beat Shirley by default. Opawa beat North Linwood by default. THIRD MIXED GRADE Avonside beat Addington, 10-6. Edgeware beat Shirley, 9-7. Linwood beat Windermere I, 100 games to 95. Windermere II beat Woolston, 11-4.
