HIGHWAY THROUGH THE PARK
Sir,—The chief features of a park are trees, grass, shrubs, and flowers to bring about that repose and quietness so necessary to the human system, and refreshing to young and old alike. To lay down a concrete highway through such a haven of rest as the park would completely defeat the purpose of its being.—Yours, etc.. E. M. LOVELL-SMITH. February 9, 1946.
Sir,—l should be pleased to receive the proposed circular embodying the arguments for and against this proposal. However; to my knowledge, the stone marking the pioneers’ camp is near the entrance of the drive into the United Courts, just off the tram line. Perhaps it is suggested that a branch road be formed, leading to the drive? May I make the suggestion that, if a new road is to be formed, it be for the strict use of pedestrians only, so that the peace and beauty of the park may be leisurely enjoyed without the disturbance of motor or horse traffic. —Yours, etc., P. G. CLEMENTS. February 8, 1946.
Sir, —I hasten to be among the earliest to congratulate you on your leading article. The pioneers who devised and brought to fruition this great heritage for posterity would turn in their graves at the idea of desecrating the North Park by putting a motor track across it. I venture the opinion that your* sentiments will be applauded by 90 per cent, of Canterbury people.—Yours, etc., HANDS OFF THE PARK. February 9, 1946.
