EFFECTS OF DROUGHT IN AUCKLAND
ALLOWANCE SOUGHT FOR DAIRY FARMERS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 5. The Auckland brench oi the Farmers’ Union has asked the Government to have a special inquiry made into the, effect of the present drought on dairy farms in the Auckland Province. The president of the upion (Mr H. M. Rushworth), in a letter to the ActingPrime Minister (the Rt. Hon. W. Nash) and the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. B. Roberts), said that, according to information received by him, dairy farmers were experiencing a decrease in production of at least 33 1-3 per cent., and there was nothing they could do to relieve the situation. "The guaranteed price basis on 6000 lb of butter-fat for the season will not in the circumstances enable the dairy farmer to meet hi, obligations and maintain his farm and stock,” stated Mr Rughworth. The Ministers were asked to arrange for official inquiries throughout the province. If such inquiries bore out the information the union had on the effect of the dry conditions, a. special allowance on the guaranteed price for this season to mitigate .some of the worst financial losses of the emergency was sought. ,
