NEW ZEALAND BOWLS TOURNAMENT

Results of First Day’s Matches

RECORD ENTRY OF 1866 PLAYERS The New Zealand Bowling Association’s Victory Tournament was opened in Christchurch yesterday. The entry was a record one, totalling 1866 players, of whom 822 are in the singles, 622 pairs in the pairs, and 372 fours in the fours. Clubs from Whangarei to Bluff were represented.

When play started at 8.30 a.m.. the surfaces were rather holding, and this appeared to trouble some of the players, especially those used to the fast North Island greens. Later, warm sunshine and a drying nor’-west wind improved the surface considerably.

Taken all round, the play yesterday was not of an outstanding nature. Many of the competitors fell far short of championship standard, and it would be in the interest of the proved players if some restriction were imposed in this respect. All the greens, thanks to the plentiful rains, were well grassed, and look like standing up to their heavy treatment during the next fortnight. During the afternoon the light nor’-west wind left the greens much faster, but it was against accurate drawing. A and B sections of the singles were completed yesterday, and to-day a start will be made with the pairs championship.

The tournament was opened at the St. Albans green by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr M. E. Lyons), who complimented the officials on the completeness of the arrangements. C. Spearman Eliminated The most sensational item of the day’s play was the elimination of C. Spearman, of the Christchurch R.S.A. Club, twice winner of the singles championship. In his first game, that with S. J. Franks (Gisborne) Spearman did not show his usual accuracy. Up to the seventh head Franks led 6-3. Then Spearman found his green, and, with the assistance of several welldirected firm shots took three ends in succession. From then on he drew away and wound up a winner, 16-10. The game Spearman v. G. E. Piper (Maitai) was full of thrills. Piper stood 5-1 after the fourth end; but then Spearman found his length and green and caught his opponent on the tenth end, mainly through Piper’s erratic play. Then Piper had a turn and took the game to 13-8 on the eleventh end. By accurate drawing Spearman captured the twelfth and thirteenth ends, carrying the score to 13 all on the thirteenth end. The nineteenth end was a long one, and Piper made the score 19-17 in his favour. Excitement ran high in the final end, when Spearman drew two good ones. With his last bowl Piper cut his opponent* out and lay shot,, the game ending in his favour, 20-19. '

The Ashburton player E. A. Cockroft was Spearman’s next opponent. Spearman started well, but after a second end Cockroft was on terms, 2 all. Three perfect draws by Spearman in the fourth end kept the Ashburton man out, but on the fifth the score was evened 5 all. The next two ends went to the R.S.A. player. 8-5. Then Cockroft struck his best form and drew excellent shots which Spearman failed to dislodge. Spearman failed in his drives on the eleventh end, leaving Cockroft 10-9. Cockroft took the next two ends, but Spearman then made the score 11 all with a toucher. By this time a short-lived sou’-wester had made play difficult, and Cockroft took the next three ends, finishing off the fifteenth 13-11. Another 3 to the Ashburton man took his score to 16-11, but on the eighteenth end Spearman ran away with the kitty and brought the score to 16-14 against him. Cockroft increased his lead to 17-14 on the twentieth end. and when they went down for the final he had 17 to his opponent’s 16. Spearman was short with his first shot but drew a beauty with his only to see his opponent rest him out with a perfect bowl. This left Cockroft the winner 18-16, and it eliminated Spear-

man. The game between Piper and H. M. Devoll (Lyttelton) was disappointing. Piper was right off his game from the start On the seventeenth end the score stood 20 to 6 in Devoirs favour, and when he scored a single on the eighteenth Piper gave up with the score 21 to 6 against him. It was poor bowling on the part of Piper, who quite failed to show the form he did against Spearman.

The Canterbury stalwart R. McNish was in great form throughout the morning’s play. In his first game against Morris (Lyall Bay) he outplayed his opponent in every department, winning 19-9. Entwhistle (Ashbury) kept with the Canterbury man for half the board, but then McNish drew many perfect shots, and ran out 22-15. McNish' also showed marked superiority over McKay (Caledonian), a poor game ending in his favour 25-9. Last year’s singles champion, J. S. Martin, of Auckland, but playing for Edgeware, was right on the top of his form and bids fair to go far in the competition. His first opponent was the Petone player, J. F. Edwards. The pair kept well together all through, both drawing some fine shots. It was only in the last two ends that Martin asserted himself and ran out 14-13. The two men soon found their length, and it was anyone’s game till the last bowl was delivered. In his second essay Martin showed to still; further advantage. He soon had a useful lead from Holloway (Dannevirke) and at the finish the score was 20-11 in his favour. His third game, against Lambess (Whangarei) was of an even nature till well into the second half. By accurate drawing, augmented occasionally by telling firm shots. Martin gradually forged ahead and ran put

Oats (Meadowbank) won his three games in section 10A. and showed such nice drawing as to suggest his going much further in the competition. In his first game, that against W. Armstrong (Shirley), he dominated the play almost from the start. Halfway down the board he was well un. and finished an easy winner. 26-12. In the second game he made short work of Munro (Thorndon). his plav being of a partiCularlv high order. The final score was 22-11 in his favour. Edmonds (Sumner) was quite outclassed by Oats in the third round. The former drew many fine shots.only to have them cut out by Oats. Th* 3 final score. Oats 27. Edmonds 5. hardly indicated the merits of the pair. The pairs championshin will commence at 8.30 this morning, when sections A and B will be gone on with. Following are yesterday’s results:—
