FOUR PERSONS INJURED
AUCKLAND TRAMCAR COLLISION
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 7. Four persons were injured and a tramway motorman had a remarkable escape from injury when two cityoound tram-cars collided violenty this afternoon. The accident occurred in Symonds street near the intersection of East street.
•urns v/uve vjai.es, 01 oanuinignaui, injured right leg and severe shock. Mr Ivan Jurich, of Mount Eden, believed to have fractured his right arm. Mrs Mavis Carmont, of Ponsonby. severe shock. The conductor of one of the trams, Mr A. N. Lewis, had an arm injured, but was not taken to hospital. The two tram-cars, which were both well filled, were proceeding in the same direction. The rear platform of the first car was cleared right back to the passenger compartment, all the woodwork being splintered and metal fittings twisted out of all recognition. The front of the second tram-car was also smashed and twisted, although less seriously. The drivers’ windows were pushed forward against the partition behind the motorman’s compartment, the motorman Mr B. B. Barber, having a remarkable escape from injury. “It sounded as if the whole tram was breaking up.” a passenger in the first tram-car said. “I jumped smartly and saw the motorman of the car behind jumping clear about the same time. Both trams were still moving when the collision occurred.” The cause of the collision will be investigated by the Auckland Transport Board.
HEAD INJURIES SUFFERED John Mercer, a linesman, aged 31 years, of 34 Lincoln road, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital shortly after midday yesterday, suffering from head injuries which he received when he fell from a tramway waggon. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED While riding a mQtor-cycle at the corner of St. Asaph street and Hagley avenue about midday yesterday, Roland Blanchard, aged 20 years, of 70 Riccarton road, came into collision with a motor-car and suffered an injury to his left arm. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital soon after and his condition last evening was reported as being satisfactory.
YOUTH ACCIDENTALLY SHOT IN BACK
David Boot, aged 17 years, of Culverden. was accidentally shot in the back while rabbit shooting about 7.30 p.m. on Sunday. He was with a companion, John Alfred Eden, also ofCulverden. Both fired at a rabbit and apparently wounded it. While Boot went to retrieve the rabbit, Eden reloaded his rifle, which discharged as Boot was bending over the rabbit, the bullet entering Boot’s back. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital on Sunday evening and his condition yesterday was reported to be satisfactory
DEER-STALKER’S BODY FOUND
The body of Reginald John Vallens, aged 32, of 95 George street. New Brighton, was found on Sunday about four miles from where he disappeared on October 4. He was on a deerstalking expedition with his brother. Mr S. A. Vallens. and was swept away while he was crossing the Boyle river near Hanmer Springs.
