SUMNER AMALGAMATION
Sir, —As nine months ago I took some part in advocating this. amalgamation, I now wish (with some others who appreciate the results) to thank the city of Christchurch for its great assistance; and our city officers for the energy and skill with which they have improved our electricity, gas, water, and other services. To Mr Hitchcock, Mr Somers, Mr Jecks, and their staffs, we owe these great and rapid improvements, which we could not have done as a borough, as we had not the plant and machinery, the finance, or the technical skill available. Our officers, now employees of the city, tell me they are happy and contented, and proud to work under the City Council and its officers. We are satisfied that the first-rate plans which Mr Barnett has made for the restoration and improvement of the sea-front will shortly materialise to the great advantage of the whole city.—Yours, etc., WM. MACHIN. January 7, 1946.
