VOLUNTEER Y.W.C.A. WORKERS
DEPARTURE FOR INDIA (P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 7. The motor ship Empire Haig left Wellington for Calcutta with an interesting passenger list of 25. It included volunteer workers for the Y.W.C.A. in India and the Friends Ambulance Unit in China, and two jockeys who were in charge of a shipment of racehorses for the Maharajah of Kashmir and other owhers in India. A large amount of the ship’s cargo was war equipment from the Army and Air Force no longer required in the Dominion.
The four New Zealanders who left as reinforcements for the Friends Ambulance Unit in China were Dr. D. J. Clifford and Mr W. R. Lucas, both of Dunedin, and Dr. Thurlow Thompson and Mrs Thompson, of Christchurch. Mrs Thompson is a trained physiotherapist. Like the. seven recruits who left in May last year, these workers are giving purely voluntary service for at least two years as members of
a unit which has already received high commendation by Chinese and Amerir can leaders* in China for its services to soldiers and civilians alike in war time. All wear Army uniform, with Red Cross shoulder flashes and hat badges.
