TROTTING NOTES

Jottings Nipper, a good performer about 20 years ago, can still show a good turn of speed as he pulls a baker’s cart round Addington. A good sprinter a few season’s ago in Waitaki Power earns his keep in the shafts of a milk delivery at Brooklands.

The U. Scott pacer AH Ashore is in P. P. Gallagher’s stable at Washdyke. Daisy Gold, which is by Gold Bar from Daisy Scott, showed speed at Waikouaiti, but did not finish on.

Knave of Diamonds has been consistently unlucky. A winning turn for him cannot be far away. Presentations were made' to Mr W. A. Craddock, secretary of the Westport Trotting Club, and to Mrs Craddock, by Mr W. S. Bennett, Blenheim, on behalf of visiting owners and trainers in appreciation of the care and attention -they received at the recent Westport meeting. Zona Grattan has previously raced well on the Washdyke course, and she may be prominent in the Waimate Handicap. Speedy Type The Sandydald horse Water Ranger, which attracted attention by his finishing effort for fourth prize in the McLean Handicap at Ashburton, has been transferred to L. Davidson’s team at New Brighton. Water Ranger raced disappointingly at the Canterbury Park meeting, but he may go better on the grass track at Washdyke this week. Won Easily

Dunamis, a five-year-old mare by Sandydale from Tat Wrack, has improved since being trained at Addington by J. Young, and recorded an easy win in the Broadway Trot at Reefton, although the official margin was only one length. Bred by Mr J. Dench, Waimate, Tat Wrack is by Wrack from Tatsy Dillon, and to Travis Axworthy she left another winner in Fast Friend. Now at Yaldhurst

Steel Swond, a seven-year-old gelding by Swordsman from Kuini, is a newcomer »om the North Island in A. Holmes’s stable. Taken to the Greymouth meeting. Steel Sword started four times, but he needs more experience before he can be supported with confidence. His dam, Ku* ini, was bred by W. N. Paul, Mangere, and she proved a useful mare, taking a record of 3min 23sec. By Nelson Bingen, she is from Golden Grattan, which is by Gold Bell from Grattan Maid, by Grattan Abbey from the imported Elsie Downs. Just Beaten

Driven by W. Gee in the Tamaki Handicap on the third day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, Noble Star was shaded on the post by Cossack, the judge’s margin being only a nose. A gelding by Nobleman from Marble Step, Noble Star—has several placings to his credit this season, and off the 36 yards

mark in the Farmers’ Handicap at Cambridge, he should be prominent at the finish. Smart Mare Mareeta’s good effort to finish third to Dunmore and Honest Peter after a slow beginning in the McLean Handicap at Ashburton on Boxing Day, should not be forgotten when the Fairlie Handicap comes up for decision at Timaru next Saturday. A five-year-old mare by Jack Potts from Queen’s Treasure, she appears to have made a complete recovery from the injuries she received in a race at Addington last year, and she should not be long in winning her way to good company. Like many Rey de Oro mares, Queen’s Treasure has been a successful . brood mare, her progeny including Single Star, Jack’s Treasure, and Hardy Oak. The latter proved the best of the family to race so far by taking a record of 3min 10 l-ssec for a mile and a half. Heydey * Last season, Heydey, a gelding by Ringtpue from Sunshower, attracted attention to his prospects by being placed in 10 of his 13 starts, and at his first appearance this season he tailed the field until the straight was reached in the Massey Memorial Handicap at the Auckland Trotr ting Club’s meeting on September 15, and then came home strongly to win by threequarters of a length from Auto Lad. A lapse of form followed, and he was unplaced at his next four starts; but, taken to the Auckland Trotting Club’s recent meeting, he secured two minor placings. If these races have improved him he should be prominent in his engagements at Cambridge this week. Paid Her Way Scottish Actress, which is trained at Templeton by W. R. Butt, paid her way on the West Coast trip with a win in the New Year Trot and a third to Hanover and Quite Evident in the President’s Handicap Trot at the Westland Racing ’ Club’s meeting. Taken to Reefton on Saturday Scottish Actress conceded starts in both her races, to finish third at both starts. The racing and travelling should improve Scottish Actress and she looks a good prospect -for coming tevents. A Neat Filly The New Brighton trained True Comrade lost her driver at the start of the Broadway Trot at Reefton, but she paraded again in the Reefton Trot later in the afternoon. After trailing the leaders. Great Artist, Sir Vesta, and Golden Game, for three-quarters of a mile, she was taken to the front, and in a good finish she hung on nicely to win by a length from the fast-finishing Mavis Grattan. True Comrade was bred by her trainer, R. J. Kerr, who races her in partnership with Mr R. Kennedy, and she is by Logan Fraser from Margaret Grattan, which is by Grattan Loyal from Letitia, by Lord Elmo from Fatality, by Electioneer from the Monte Cristo mare Accident. Won Well

At the Waikato meeting Professional won comfortably from Baby Grand in the first division of the Frankton Handicap? and as the latter went on to win at the Auckland meeting, the Waikato form should be a good guide to Professional’s chances in the Members’ Handicap at Cambridge on Saturday. Professional, which is trained by F. Smith at Frankton, is a well-bred mare, being by Jack Potts Auditress, and is therefore a sister to the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Marlene, and to other good ers in Accountant and Audition.
