SYDNEY-HOBART OCEAN RACE

YACHT SUPPOSED LOST WINS

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) HOBART, January 2. The cutter Rani won the SydneyHobart yacht race, crossing the finishing line at 1.22 a.m. to-day after making a surprising reappearance in the contest yesterday afternoon. Since Thursday, the Rani and another competitor, the Horizon, had been “missing” and an air search had failed to locate them.

The Horizon was sighted 80 miles from Hobart by a searching Catalina to-day near the becalmed ketch, Winston Churchill. The crew of the Rani, which dramatically emerged to win the race after not being seen for five days, told of their battle with a storm off the New South Wales coast last Thursday. They said the sails were ripped. The pumps failed, and the yacht had to be bailed out with pots and saucepans. The crew had 24 hours of hard stitching to repair the mainsail, which was torn in the storm. The spinnaker was tom and the jib blown out. The Rani’s sailing time was 158 hr 22min 35sec. The ketch Winston Churchill, which looked a certain winner, is said to be becalmed off the east coast of Tasmania.
