CHRISTCHURCH BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL

The school records, still incomplete, showed that 1234 old boys had served overseas in- the recent war, said Mr A. E. Caddick, headmaster of the Christchurch Boys' High School, at the school's prize-giving ceremony last evening. Of these, 51 were known to have been wounded, 16 were still missing, 104 decoranla?d distinctions had been won. and 157 had laid down their lives. One old boy had commanded the division in Italy until severely wounded; another, a master of the school, had commanded a brigade, and another master had commanded a battalion in the Pacific. ' Mr Caddick reviewed a full and successful year in the school. The roll had reached a record number, and the school had had a particularly successful year in the university examinations. The special prizes, which are listed below, and form prizes were presented by Mr J. H. E. ' RANGIRURU SCHOOL "I am not always in accordance with modern education, which I feel tends to ; leave too much to the will and inclina- ; tion of the child," said the principal of Rangi-ruru School (Miss E. Gibson), when presenting her report at the annual prizegiving ceremony held yesterday. "Often a pupil in her first or second year will, if she can, take the line of least resistance. If this is allowed to happen, the dogged perseverance of the pioneers will give way to mental flabbiness," Miss Gibson said.. Archdeacon A. J. Petrie spoke particularly to the girls leaving school, and urged them to bear out the best traditions of the school by trying to break down the spirit of getting, rather than of giving, which was prevalent in the world to-day.
