Mr C. G. F. Simkin, M.A., has accepted the Chair- of Economics at Auckland University , College. The offer was made by the college council yesterday morning and Mr-Simkin's acceptance was confirmed in Dunedin, where he is on holiday. Mr Simkin was appointed lecturer in economics at Canterbury University College in 1939, and was granted leave to enter the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1942. He was released from the Air Force a few months ago after service in the meteorological section in the Pacific. Officers were elected as follows at the annual meeting yesterday of the Canterbury Society of Arts:—patron, his Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall; president, Mr A, E. Flower; vice-presidents, Messrs H. G. Helmore, M.8.E., C. F. Kelly, Geoffrey Wood, Sydney L. Thompson, 0.8. E., and W. T. Tretheweyj council, Messrs Archibald F. Nicoll, C. S. Lov-ell-Smith, A. C. Brassington, R. S. Lonsdale, and W. S. Newburgh, Miss Olivia Spencer-Bower, and Mrs A. Elizabeth Kelly. C.8.E.; treasurer, Mr R. A. Wallwork, A.R.C.A. (London); secretary, Mr W, S. Baverstock. A motion of sympathy .with the relatives of Dr. Robinson E. Hall was passed at the annual mid-recess dinner of the Christchurch Savage Club, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. Dr. Hall was Great Chief of the club in 1936.
