TURF GOSSIP

Omitted . Horses as follows should be included in the acceptances for the Hororata meeting on Saturday:—Sir Tagut, 7-7, in the Hororata Hack Handicap; Kernel and Miss Llterwater, in the Novice Stakes; and Here Hine, 7-9, and Simon Tor, 7-7, in the Sandown Hack Handicap. Cup Candidates for Ellerslie The idea of taking Golden Souvenir to Dunedin for the Hazlett Gold Cup and to give him his next race in the Wellington Cup has been abandoned, and he is now to go to Ellerslie for the Auckland Cup. We will probably be accompanied by Bruce, and the pair will go north in the charge of L. J, Ellis next week. T. H. Gillett will leave at the same time with Miss Medley, and ther/is a possibility that he will also tafce Palfrey, which is also in the Aucklynd Cup. Golden Souvenir has 8-10 in the Auckland Cup, and will be meeting .Ulss Medley on no less than 191b worse terms tlian when he was beaten by her in the Canterbury Cup. Last Easter at Ellerslie Miss Medley was beaten on the post in the Great Northern Oaks, and won the Great Northern St. Leger. Promising Race

Graeme, which raced prominently in the Irwell Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, is a two-year-old gelding by Salmagundi from Hula Belle, bred in Australia by Beau Fils from MaxweUtown by Sir Dighton from Annie Laurie by Charlemagne 11, and is trained at Riccarton by V. Lee for his West Coast owner. Mr T Rothwell. This was Graeme's second race only, and his fourth placing behind more seasoned youngsters was very promising. Hart Royal

. Hart Royal was the unlucky runner in the Irwell Handicap, as he was checked by Faithful Pal when jumping out of the barrier, and his rider lost his irons. In spite of these disadvantages he finished with great dash to get up for third money. Hart Royal is a black colt by Wild Chase from High Rank by Day Comet from Sailor's Hope, dam of Fast Passage, Waterline, Streamline, and others, so he has every credential. He will probably have his next race in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes this month. Shaped Well The high-priced filly Rahine gave a pleasing display in her first race, the Acorn Stakes, at Riccarton, last week. bhe got away well, and was at no stage lar away from the leaders, finishing in littn place on terms with Prana. The latter is a brown filly .y Nightly from Silver Sands, and is owned by her breeder Mr W. R. Toon, who raced Silver Sands. She was making her second appearance in public, and shaped s-atisfactorily. Master Robin The three-year-olds seen out at Riccarton could not generally be considered a good lot, and Al-Sirat and Master Robin stood out. There is not much between this pair, but Master Robin may yet prove to be the better. He was rather unlucky J n ! hc L Canterbury Cup, as he was slow to find his feet and was in last place for the first five furlongs. He showed a turn of speed to be up with the leaders a furlong from home, and tried to make a run on the outside of them, but had to b „ e J aken t0 the inside, and, with Miss Medley and Golden Souvenir locked together on the outside of him, his rider had very little room for action. The opinion was expressed by those who had a close-up view of the incident that with a ™?5 e , favourable passage, Master Robin would have had a fairly comfortable win. Cveditable Performance . Royal Rae ran another creditable race m the Fendaiton Handicap, but once again found the distance a little beyond him. Pie has stood up to his recent rac"}S well, and a win for him is not far distant. He should go well over seven furlongs at the Hororata fixture. Lord Advocate Lord Advocate raced very disappointingly at the Cup meeting. He had galloped well on the tracks, and had ground to suit him each day, so there was not any excuse» for him Burberry Improves Burberry ran his best race for some weeks when he filled third place in the Members' Handicap last week. He has a chance to make good at Motukarara next Saturday. Rakanul Again After a breakdown in last year's Canterbury Cup, Rakanul was considered unlikely to do much more racing, if any, but after patient treatment in the intervening months, he has staged a remarkable come-back by winning last month at Woodville and at Te Rapa last Saturday. In the latter race he was fifth favourite, but his success was none the less popular and he received an ovation on returning. Billy Peach, which is in the Te Awamutu Cup and the Auckland Cup, set out to win all the way, and he looked like doing it until first Air Port and then Rakanui challenged in the closing stages, Rakanui doing the best work, with Air.Port nosing out the pacemaker. All three ran fine races. Dunbar and Hippodrome, well back in the early part, finished well, but the bracketed pair, Ex-' panse and Representative, faded out In the final quarter. Lou Rosa broke a blood vessel before the field had gone half the journey, and he choked and fell. His Auckland Cup ..engagement is now very much in the balance. Rakanui is engaged in the Auckland Cup with 8-7, and is expected to fulfil his engagement. At Long Odds Listen In, making her first appearance for the season, outclassed the sprinters in the Railway Handicap at Woodville on Saturday. She is owned by Mr J. A. Neilson. Dunedin, and is a member of the team which J. A. Wilson recently transferred from Wingatui to Levin. She was one of three winners to return double figure dividends, the others being Merger in the hurdles and Astrope in a division of the maiden event. Wilson was at Riccarton for the first two days of the cup meeting looking after Honest Sal, but returned north 'for the Woodville fixture. Rider Injured The Invercargill horseman, G. Barclay, broke a collarbone in a training mishap at Invercargill on Saturday morning, says the "Southland Times." Barclay was riding Signal Officer in a five-furlong sprint with Salad, and after the pair had raced together to the three furlong post Signal Officer crossed his legs and fell heavily. Barclay was badly shaken, and it was later found that he had broken a collarbone. Signal Officer appeared to be none the worse for the mishap, but it was an unfortunate happening, as the Salmagundi gelding had just recently recovered from a bruised foot. Doubtful Starter Lou Rosa, which broke a blood vessel and fell at Te Rapa on Saturday, badly cut its hind legs. It was stated yesterday morning that it is by no means certain the horse will start in the Auckland Cup.—(P.A.) Offer Refused While Mr A. E. Bowler, part-owner of Barwon, was in Sydney recently an offer of .6000 guineas was made for the two-year-old. Mr Bowler, who has returned to Auckland, states that the offer was declined. Barwon, which was purchased at the last Trentham sales for the record price of 3000 guineas, has won two of the three races he has contested. His successes were in the Tamahere Stakes at Te Rapa and the Cambria Handicap at Ellerslie. The son of Foxbridge and Ann Acre is engaged in the Great Northern Foal Stakes to be run at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Highly Regarded As a result of her success in the Rakino Handicap at Ellerslie, Regal Praise must be regarded as the best of the northern two-year-old fillies seen out this season. The most pleasing feature of her success was the solid manner in which she ran out the five furlongs after being carried out wide at the home turn. By the New Zealand and Melbourne Cup winner Nightmarch, from Praise, a winner of the the New Zealand Oaks, Regal Praise is a member of one of the most successful families in New Zealand. She is a sister to Serenata, Russian Ballet, and Representative. Serenata won the New Zealand Cup in record time. Representative won the Great Northern Guineas, Avondale Guineas, Avondale Cup. and ran second in the New Zealand Cup, while Russian Ballet's wins included the Wanganui Guineas and the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Regal Praise is engaged in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and may be better suited by the extra furlong in this event than a number of her rivals. Stout Blood Lines Miss Medley was bred in South Canterbury by Mr L. W. Connelly. Toti dal Monte, grandam of Medley, was owned by Mr F. Williamson, who bred Rebel Song (a Great Easter Handicap winner), Silyox Screamer. Haughty Toti (dam of Gigli), and Rebel Lass from her. Mr Connelly later purchased Toti dal Monte and Rebel Lass from Mr Williamson, who secured the latter's first foal. Miss Medley. Rebel Lass was foaled in 1936. and is by Robespierre from Toti dal Monte by Gay Lad from imported Trebelli II by Thrush from Dramatica by St. Simon. With such breeding behind her, it is not to be wondered at that Miss Medley possesses marked stamina for a four-year-old filly. Her sire. Salmagundi, has left many high-class performers in New Zealand, and his death last year through an accident, was a severe blow to the bloodstock industry. He was l by Phalaris from Salmandra, by St. Frusquin, and before cpming to New Zealand was at the stud in Australia, where he has also been represented by numerous winners. Since being put into work by Mr Williamson, Miss Medley has been in the care of T. H. Gillett, who has adopted his usual patient policy with her, with most successful results. Improved Stamina Western Front was seen in a new role in the Stonyhurst Hack Handicap on Saturday. In previous races he has been prominent amongst the leaders for most of the journey only to fail to stay on, but on Saturday he was always In the middle of the field, and only became prominent in- the last furlong. He put in some telling work over the final stages, and wore down all but the winner, Delinquent. Western Front has been an expensive proposition for Mr G. J. Barton since he purchased him as yearling for 900 guineas, but on Saturday's form the colt promises soon to get out of the maiden class. ,

TROTTING NOTES

Was Withdrawn Prince Dale was included in the acceptances for the Glendore Trot at Motukarara in error. Driver Fined i For oiTensive behaviour to an official of the club at the matinee meeting at Auckland on Saturday, M. Stewart, the driver df the Sante Fe filly in the parade, was fined £lO. Well Placed Since her easy win in the Selma Trot at Ashburton in September. Lady Ngaio has been well supported In her races, but she has been unplaced at her last three starts. Driven by B. Lynskey, she broke up in the first furlong in the Little River Trot at Motukarara last month, but with a better beginning she should be in the firing line all the way in the Snowdon Trot this week. Matinee at Auckland ' Although only five of the two-year-olds engaged in the Great Northern' Trotting Stakes in February paraded at the Epsom matinee on Saturday, their appearance attracted attention and favourable comment. Two, a gelding by Josedale Grattan from Stenographer, and a filly by Übakim from Santa Fe, showed that they were more forward than the others when they were sprinted over four furlongs and a half. The Santa Fe filly took the lead entering the straight, but broke and ran to the outside, leaving the Stenographer gelding, which finished straight and Vfesolutely, to be first past the post. As was to be expected after their forward running at Claudelands, Parrish Jewel and Baby Grand gained promotion to the improvers' class by winning their respective events. Parrish Jewel scored in the First Milford Handicap from Bonnie Jack, while Baby Grand had a comfortable win from Shepherd's Brook in the Second Milford Handicap. Both Bonnie Jack and Shepherd's Brook, which are newcomers to F. J. Smith's team, show much promise. There was a surprise in the Third Milford Handicap, when Glen Parrish narrowly beat Auto Era. Noble Star, a consistent young trotter, won the Hobsonville Handicap, but had Keen Blade not broken about 60 yards from the finish Noble Star would have been second. These two outclassed the field, and. they should go on to better company.

The limit horses, Larry Grattan and Red Ace, were first and second in the Bayswater Handicap, with Highland Fling third. Highland Fling ran quite a good race, and looks likely to regain form for the Great Northern Derby. From 168 yards behind, Volo Senwod gave a solid display, and was not far behind the placed horses. His time was approximately 3min 16 l-ssec, and it was a useful trial for his Auckland Trotting Cup engagement. From Belfast •

C. S. Donald has Jack Daly and Tolerate engaged at the trials at New Brighton, and their running should be a guide to their chances at the coming meetings. Jack Daly has taken time to show his best form, and he will need to begin much better than he did at Forbury to have a chance in his races. Tolerate, a gelding by Gamble from Endurance, carried some solid support at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting, but he broke with a mile covered. This gelding has a private reputation of being able to trot fast, and he may be prominent in his engagements this month. Likely Type Absplutely, a mare by Quite Sure from Sonnette, took the eye in the Empire Handicap at Forbury. Driven by J, Walsh, she was always handy to the leaders, and her effort over the last four furlongs, which carried her into third place, suggests that she is above the average. Trained by G. W. Julius at Balclutha, she races in the interests of Mr R. C. Burnby, who bred r - her dam, Sonnette, which is by Sungod from the O.Y.M. mare My ola. Back in Form After winning two races in his three starts as a six-year-old in the 1943-44 season, the Rey de Oro horse Gold Chief did not race last season, but he was produced on the second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's cup meeting in the New Zealand Intermediate Sprint, in which he was probably the unluckiest runner in the race, and was beaten into fourth place. If S. Messervy had been able to get a run with him in the straight, there is little doubt that he would have troubled the winner. Medical Student, instead of having to accept the minor money in a blanket finish. Gold Chief's last win was over Oxford Scholar in the Selwyn Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting on January 3, 1944, and history may repeat itself at the coming meeting. A handsome stallion, he was bred by his owner, Mr J. B. Westerman, and is from a fast mare in Dupolina, which took a mile record of 2min 8 l-ssec. This mare was also bred by Mr Westerman, and is by the imported Drilsus from Doraldina. by O.Y.M. from the Rothschild mare Dollar Princess. Gold Chief has been nominated for the President's Handicap at the New Brighton meeting next week, and he should be prominent. Did Not Impress In the 1941-42 season Gold Weed, an aged gelding by Wrack from Golden Nut, won two races in good style and secured two minor placings, but he made only one appearance the following season for a second to Will Cary in the Menzles Handicap at Wyndham in March, 1943. Since then he has been off the scene, but he competed in the Spring Handicap, at Forbury Park, where, handicapped on the 48 yards mark, he failed to make any impression on the field. Gold Weed is now at an age where little improvement can be expected. From Auckland Steel Sword, which has been nominated in the maiden trotters' event at the trials this week, is an aged gelding by Swordsman from Kuini, a Nelson Bingen mare which took a record of 3min 23sec as a trotter before she was retired. Earlier in the season, Steel Sword was trained for Mr V. Barker by F. J. Smith, and at his only appearance he broke up after leading for nine furlongs in "the Second Greenlane Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club's matinee meeting in September. Attractive Breeding It is reported that Smile Again, the dam of the Dillon Hall colt which topped the market at the recent yearling sales, has produced a filly by Dillon Hall and has been returned to the same sire, The Sydney owner for whom the Dillon Hall yearling was purchased has Intimated that he intends to breed from him later on, states the "Otago Daily Times." If the Dillon Hall colt is kept for stud purposes he will be the first of the famous Regina family to be given such an opportunity. Southern Chief was one of the few of the family to be left entire for long. Grand Mogul (a brother to Smile Again) was sent to Australia, where he was a good winner. Mission Queen (a sister to Smile Again) was sold to Australia as a brood mare. Mission Queen's young stock have been highly rated, so that with the purchase of the Dillon Hall yearling the Regina family, which has provided many fine winners, ■will be well represented In Australia.
