ASSOCIATION OF ART SOCIETIES

ANNUAL MEETING HELD Regret that the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts had given notice of its withdrawal from the Association of New Zealand Art Societies was expressed at the recent annual meeting of the association by the retiring president (Miss t. H. Carey). The association performed a useful service, she -said, as its policy was to assist the development and extension of all functions which were the concern of member societies, without interfering with their rights of complete autonomous control. Exhibitions arranged By the association had great educational value, continued Miss Carey, and they had been good publicity for artists. The Government was being urged to adopt as a policy the fixing of a percentage on all estimates for major public build--’ ings to provide for mural decorations and sculpture. The Auckland Society of Arts, the Waikato Society of Arts, the Napier Art Society, the Nelson Suter Art Society, and the New Zealand Institute of Architects were represented at the meeting. , Mr J. C. Tole, of Auckland, was elected president for the ensuing year.
