CUEEENT NOTES The 'Kathrine McCullough prize for conversational French, presented at the annual pnze-giving ceremony of St. Bede's College yesterday to James Taylor Skeddon, was given in memory of Mrs McCullough by her son, Dr. Edward McCullough. a former pupil of the college The competition <open to pupils of fat Bede*s) was judged by Monsieur H Honore president of the Cercle Francais Mrs McCullough. windied last year, was the youngest child of the late Bernard Mora, who was one of the early colonists brought from France by the Compagnie Bordelaise and settled in Akaroa almost a hundred years ago. A cheque from the North Canterbury Hospital Board for Christmas cheer for the children was gratefully received, and it was decided to send ice cream each week to the home during the holiday period from the Christmas cheer fund. ,Tho secretary reported there are 96 applications in nend 'for the holiday period.' The Rev T- M Curnow will retire in February, and he and Mrs Curnow intend to make their home n Auckland The fourth group of children from the Sunlighl League Health Camp Committee's camp at "Glenelg" returned to their homes this week, and the fifth group went to camp on Thursdsy. Five cuildren from Westland arrived at "C nelg" on Thursday and the five who have been there for several weeks will return home to-day In the new group are five from Ashburton, two from Timaru. five from Westland one from Kaiapoi. and the remainder from the city and suburbs The improvement in the weight of the last group of children, who were at "Glenelg" for eight weeks, was remarkable The average gain a child was 12 pouMs; one gained less than nine pounds, and one gained 19 pounds The great majority .sained between 4 ,,1 l and 13 pounds and all improved "in general health. The present group will rtmain at "Glenelg" for eight or nine weeks

An interesting handwork display was held at Selwyn House yesterday afternoon. A special feature of the display was bookbinding and dressmaking by girls of Form 111. A French piay in aid of Junior Red Cross funds was performed very successfully, and more than £4 was raised. Afternoon tea was served

Parents ot pupils of the Christchurch Girls' High School were yesterday given an opportunity of seeing the type of work done by pupils in all forms during the year An extensive range of subjects was covered in the exhibition, which included displays of leatherwork. bookbinding, and other crafts, hand-sewing and embroidery poster painting, pencil sketches, and many other branches of art work, which gave evidence of careful training and often great originality and t&lent. The range of work undertaken by pupils in the dressmaking classes was ambitious, &nd the garments, which included winter coats, costumes, frocks, blouses, and embroidered clothes for children, were a credit to the pupils and teachers. Work undertaken by third form, fourth form, and fifth form' girls in social studies and biology was also exhibited. Much interest was taken by parents in the display featuring the various stages in the preparation of the backcloth for "Quality Street," which was presented recently by the pupils. The prepara tion of the backcloth. by no means an easy task was done exclusively by the pupils;"'' Also ''"exrTiblted r ''were stage properties used in the play.
