SERVICEMEN’S ECONOMIC PENSIONS
Sir, —The Government’s reply to requests of the New Zealand Returned Servicemen’s Association for increases in economic pensions should be further investigated by the Dominion executive. The Government states that the economic pension was increased in 1943 by 5s a week. Since then the cost of living has soared, and although others have received general increases, including members of Parliament, the Government now states it has no money to warrant any increases for incapacitated former service personnel,. The war pension is a definite charge upon the Government, and as it is not charity, claimants expect to oe compensated, when general increases have been made to all. The Government could never have implemented its policies had it not been for those who fought and suffered. It is easy and cheap to pay lip service, but why not grant the modest requests put forward by the New Zealand Reurned Servicemen’s Association 7 Fours, etc., _ PUBLIC OPINION. December 1. 1945.
