SWIMMING SEASON OPENED The twenty-fifth season of the Lyttelton Men's Amateur Swimming Club was opened at Corsair Bay on Saturday afternoon by the president, Mr S. Tredennick, in considerable rain, Results of events were:—: 50 Yards Freestyle J. Finnerty (Msec) 1, B. Norton (lOsec) 2, R. Norton (13sec) 3. 50 Yards Breaststroke.—R. Duff (scr) 1, R. Norton (ssec) 2, J. Finnerty (Usee) 3. Dive.—R. Stanley (131 points) 1. R. Duff (12J points) 2, J. Finnerty (91 points)' 3. R.S.A. Building Opened Several months of negotiation with the Defence Department and hard work on the part of some of the members were rewarded when, on Saturday evening, the Lyttelton branch of the Returned Services' Association opened its new rooms in the former drfllshed at Lyttelton. The main room is a large dance hall, aijd there are a billiards room, card rooms, and other offices. Much of the work involved in the alterations to the building was done by members in their spare time. The opening of the building was marked by a social and dance, at which there was an attendance of more than 300 persons.

Mr D. Taylor, president of the branch, welcomed 'members and guests and asked Mr T. H. McCombs, M.P., to declare the rooms opened. The Returned Services" Association offered a great deal to the returned servicemen, said Mr McCombs. It was wide open to all servicemen, and was just as democratic as was the Army itself. He congratulated the branch on securing the building and on the remarkable transformation it had achieved. Mr McCombs then declared the building open. The Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) congratulated the club on having acquired so splendid a building. He welcomed to Lyttelton the guest of honour for the evening. Captain C. H. tJpham, V.C. and bar.

Mr E. Orchard, speaking for the Christchurch Returned Services' Association, congratulated the Lyttelton branch on having secured a splendid hall. In thanking the Mayor for his welcome. Captain Upham said he knew of no better way of spending his spare time than in the company of his comrades of the association.
