COST OF ULTIMATE SOCIALISM
Sir, —“Worker’s Wife’s" remarks indicate lack of foresight and experience. In world affairs, only two issues emanate from - chaos—regimentation by government control and price fixation, with its attendant benefits, the right to live for every worker, old age. disability, sickness, and medical benefits provided. no poverty,, and undue profits, unemployment, and r fear of want removed; or your famous private enterprise in its entirety, with its attendant wars, slumps, unemployment, starvation, profiteering, exploitation of raw materials for profit, and the throttling tactics of monetary control by international financiers. Under Socialism you pay with service to humanity. Under capitalism (private ' enterprise) you pay in money, lives and servitude to monetary combines. It is for “Worker’s Wife" to count the cost, remembering sickness and old age are constantly on the horizon.—Yours, etc., ‘ W. SMITH. November 28, 1945. Sir, —I have been interested in “Worker’s Wife” and “Whig.” In my opinion the palm must be awarded to “Worker’s Wife,” vide her letter in “The Press” to-day. There is no question about another matter, if jobs have been lavishly handed out in Government departments; a full treasury is being achieved, and the octopus hold on private enterprise means the obliteration of self-action, self-thought, and all that which begets manhood's outlook. Gladstone stated many years ago that money must be left in the people's pockets to fructify, and taxation was not to be kept at excessive levels. “Worker’s Wife” to-day gives enlightenment.—Yours, etc., R. F. E. FILDES. November 30. 194!?.
