Miss J. M. Jennings, who has been attached to the massage department of the Christchurch Hospital tor the last 17 years, has been appointed to the staff of the Ashburton Public Hospital and tendered her resignation to the North Canterbury Hospital Eoard yesterday morning. Appreciation of her long and faithful service was recorded with special reference to her .management of the department during the war years... The Sunlight League Health Camp Committee gratefully acknowledges receipt of a gift of 22 dozen eggs for preserving from the West Melton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers* Union. The matron at the health camp, "Glenelg," Murray Aynsley Hill, would be grateful for gifts of gooseberries or rhubarb for the children. Arrangements could be made to have the gooseberries picked, if necessary. The North Canterbury Social Club for the Blind held the final social afternoon for the year in the Jellicoe Hall on Tuesday. Mr P. Jowett, a vicechairman, welcomed the/guests. Part of the programme was provided by blind persons. Songs were sung by Mrs D. Chant, Mr L. P. Longuet gave an interesting talk on his work 1 as a teacher in the School for the Deaf, and musi- : cal items were given by Miss R. Barrow | and Miss C. Tamplin, and recitations by j Miss M. Wotton.

Twenty-six nurses of the Christchurch Hospital, who sat their final hospital examination recently, were all successful, according to a report made, to the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday morning by Sir Hugh Acland, as chairman of the hospital committee.

Miss Norah Nutt was the guest speaker at the quarterly meeting of the Lyttelton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, held in Holy Trinity Schoolroom. Her subject was "Pre-war Travelling ,in Europe." Mrs Plowman presided and the committee served tea. At the last meeting of Air Force Relations, it was decided to close the depot officially on Wednesday, December 5, and to recall all outstanding wool and all garments, finished or unfinished. These should be delivered at the depot, at the corner of High and Lichfield streets before next Wednesday. As the result of a request from the Y.W.C.A. of India, Burma, and Ceylon, members in New Zealand have been collecting a fund to help the Y.W.C.A. in Rangoon to reconstruct itself after the blitz and the occupation by the Japanese. This fund is being collected in several countries and the New Zealand association hopes, before the end of the year, to be able to send at least £125 to Burma.

After four years with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service, as masseuse on the hospital ship Maunganui. Miss Zona M. Haworth is to be demobilised this month, and for the next six months will carry out the duties of assistant inspector of physiotherapy departments, under the Department of Health." Miss Haworth has given outstanding service while with the N.Z.A.N.S., and during the time the hospital ship was berthed in England she took a special course in physical rehabilitation work. She was invested with the A.R.R.C. at Buckingham Palace last year. Before enlisting, Miss Haworth was on the staff of the Memorial Hospital, Hastings. In the absence of the chairwoman (Mrs H. B. S. Johnstone), Miss D. Austin presided at the recent monthly meeting of the board of managers of Strat'heona hostel. Mrs J. A. McLeod, who presented the farm report, stated that seasonal work had proceeded satisfactorily. The matron reported that three trainees had completed tests in private homes. The applications of two new trainees were accepted. Gifts of money or groceries were acknowledged from the Timaru, Clandeboye, and Pleasant Point branches of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, and from the following women's institutes: Winchester, Allandale, Taiko, Glenavy, Waihao Downs, Glen-iti. Hilton, Pleasant Point, Willowbridge, Sherwood Downs, Morven, Claremont, and Seadpwn. Gifts were also received from several persons interested in the hostel, and' from a. fo.rmer trainee.

Mrs A. M. Clarke, a major in the British Army Nursing Service in Colombo since 1942, is visiting her sister, Mrs G. H. R. Ulrich, Timaru. Mrs Clarke, formerly Miss Evelyn Robinson, was educated at the Timaru Girls* High School and first went. to. Ceylon 25 years ago. After spending her leave in New Zealand she intends to return to Ceylon. A street collection in aid • of the funds of the "Glenelg" permanent health camp for children was conducted in the city and some of the suburbs yesterday by the District Executive Committee in conjunction with officials of the post office, and the sum of about £260 was raised for the maintenance of the health camp. Deep appreciation of Miss M. Beadel's outstanding qualities, both as a golfer and as an administrator of the club, was expressed by Mrs M. H. Godby. president of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club at the closing-of-the-season ceremony held at the golf house, Shirley, yesterday afternoon. Miss BeadeJ. who has been a member of the committee of the club for many years, did not seek re-election yesterday Mrs Godby recalled that Miss Beadel had been champion of the club and had upheld its prestige in many provincial and Dominion tournaments. She had also held the posts of honorary secretary and honorary treasurer for several years, and was one of the club s most popular members. Mrs J. Mash lan (chairwoman of the women's organisations of the National Party, Christchurch North), and Mrs F. Moginie (secretary) entertained about 45 members of the committee of the organisation at morning tea at the D.I.C. yesterday. Among the guests was Mrs S. G. Holland, wife oj the leader of the Opposition. Mrs Mashlan thanked members for the splendid co-operation they had given her and her officers during the year, which had been most successful. Mrs R. T. Tosswill, on behalf of the guests, thanked the hostesses for their hospitality.
