CLERICAL TITLES

Sir,—The matter of mutual respect is -not in question. “Honour to Whom” bases his defence of the use of the title “Reverend”—a superlative which Scripture reserves to God only—on the ground that the clergy speak and act in God’s name. No evidence is forthcoming of this. The New Testa-, ment furnishes examples of men who were commissioned of God to speak in His name, and who, by the signs and wonders God did through them, gave evidence of their credentials. In no instance did they assume any title of majesty. Practically all of them were persons of lowly estate, such being most suitable “that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of men," “that no flesh should glory.” In preaching and practice let the clergy conform to these examples and more people will hear a pure gospel.—Yours, etc., FISHER OF MEN.
