VISIT TO N.Z. FOR RECUPERATION
♦ NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES’ PROPOSAL (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, September 23. Final proposals for a suggested visit by civilians and former prisoners of war from the Netherlands East Indies to New Zealand for a period of recuperation and rest have not yet been received by the New Zealand Government, according to a statement made by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) on Saturday. The Netherlands East Indies’ authorities, who will make the necessary financial provisions, are now examining the position and hope shortly to furnish detailed proposals. After these have been considered by the New Zealand Government a more complete statement will be made by the Prime Minister. Mr Fraser said that the New Zealand Government had indicated that any submissions which the Netherlands’authorities might make with respect to the propose 1 would be sympathetically considered. It was not expected that any of the evacuees who might come to New Zealand would be hospital cases. The idea was that they should remain in the* Dominion for a period, during which it was hoped that with rest and care they would be restored to their former state of health.
