TROTTING NOTES Withdrawals for Methven Owners and trainers are reminded that withdrawals for the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting next Saturday close on Monday at 5 p.m. —6 Jottings If Tony Grattan would race up to his track-work he would take a lot of beating in the Geraldine Trot. He is trained by C. M. Laing at Tinwald. He is also engaged in the faster class race later in the day. Gamester has started only once since coming from the North Island, and his performance to finish third to Sir Raymond and Gamble King in the Opihi Trot at Timaru entitles him to consideration to-day. Admiration,. a mare by Grattan Loyal from Bonny Logan, is highly regarded by Addington track-watchers. She will probably be of the best backed in the Orari Trot. Siege Gun, a winner among the pacers a few seasons ago, has been nominated for the Introductory Trot at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting. Two Divisions at Orari There are 32 acceptors in the Geraldine Trot to-day, and as the number allowed on the limit mark is 21, the race will be run in two divisions as follows: First division; Ace of Diamonds, Avowal, Black Rod, Direct Medium, Donald Dinnie, Garforth, Glen Devon, Granny’s Luck, Hanover. Rose Volo, Limeripk Pride. Lord Peterson. Nelsonova. Prince Dale, Scottish Lord, Tony Gratton, Lady Spray: second division: Indigo. Catalina, Sandiford, Pearline, Fire Bar, Gold Winner, Otley’s Hope, Herald, Paddy Potts, Knocknagree. Lotty Jinks, Mercury Maid, Palava, Private Seal, Special Effort, Wee Logan, Safety First. Large Nominations The New Brighton Trotting Club received 258 nominations for the nine events on its spring programme. The number of maiden and improving horses in work is revealed by 53 pacers being nominated for the Brighton Maiden Handicap, which is to be run in two divisions, each carrying a stake of £IOO, and 46 for the Improvers’ Handicap of £325, whilst the feature event, the £IOOO President’s Handicap, has attracted a field of only 14. Was Well Backed Gamble King was solidly supported In the Rakaia Trot at Ashburton where he was well placed all the way to finish third, and over the shorter distance in the Orari Trot to-day he should again be in the money. The hardest for him to beat appears to be Plunder Bar, which lost ground at the start and then beat him when the straight was reached at Ashburton. Died Suddenly The pacing mare Annie Laurie died suddenly from an attack of acute indigestion at Marion, Ohio, recently. She had won second money in a 1000 dollar race the week before, and appeared to be regaining her best form. . Her death is a loss to the light-harness business, as she would have been a great brood mare when her racing days were finished. -Annie Laurie was owned by Mr S. Hawley, who has been racing horses since 1898, and as a three-year-old at Muncie, Indiana, in 1944, took a record of 2min sisec, the fastest ever credited to one of her age and gait over an Indiana half-mile track. lias Some Speed Hanover, a gelding by Jack Potts from Audrey Dillon, has shown ability in some of his races, and his best performance last season was a second to Gamble King in the second division of the Williams Handicap at Westport, where he made up a lot of ground after losing hjs position when a collision occurred. He is trained by L. Williams, and may be prominent in the Geraldine Trot. Trained at Ashburton Glen Devon, which is engaged in the Geraldine Trot, is by Logan Fraser from a Wrack-Trilby Child mare, and is trained at Ashburton by J. Behms, who also has another novice in Emondale in his team. The flatter is a gelding by Sandydale from Colleen Derby.
