MIDDLE EAST PROBLEMS
CONSULTATIONS HELD IN LONDON PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE PROSPERITY (Rec 7 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20. All problems of the Middle Eastfinancial, economic, and social—which were raised by a return to peace, have been examined by the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin), in consultation with British representatives in the Middle East, who were summoned to London for the discussions, reports the Foreign Office. The Government believed that a survey of the whole field of policy in the Middle East was desirable. Valuable recommendations which will be considered by the Government resulted from the discussions. It is hoped to contribute to the joint prosperity of Middle East peoples. The Government, because of the vital importance of this region to Empire communications, is impressed with the desirability of strengthening relations with the Middle East on the basis of m-itual co-operation and the promotion of social and economic well-being Mutual understanding built up in the Middle East by wartime organisations offers a favourable prospect for fruitful co-operation in its future economy, ABSENTEEISM IN MINES (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 20, The National Executive of the Mine Workers' Union, conferring in London decidad not to protect or support any miner against whom legal action had been taken after he had refused to accept his obligations under thi new arrangements by the Minister of Fue' (Mr Emanuel Shinwell) for dealing with absenteeism in the pits. The executive endorsed the Fue Ministry's proposals for a drive for in> creased coal production.
