NEW BUILDING PROPOSED
—*— . HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S PLANS, CONTRACT TO PURCHASE SITE The Canterbury Horticultural Society has entered into a contract for the purchase of the property at the corner of Gloucester street and Cambridge terrace owned and occupied by Dr. F. L. Scott. The sale cannot be completed before approval has been given by the Land Sales Court, but if it is approved the society intends eventually to erect on the site a building, probably of two storeys, for its flower shows and other activities. The chairman of the management committee of the society (Mr J. R. Templin) said yesterday that when the society took possession of the property it would be rented until the building could be erected. No plans had been prepared, but when the building restrictions were lifted, the society hoped ultimately to put up a building which would be a credit to that end of the city. The site had an area of 46J perches, and the ground floor of the building would give far more space than was available for the society’s shows at the Caledonian Hall. The proposed building would be one or two storeys, and would be available for use by other societies. The position was most suitable, and there were frontages on Gloucester street and Cambridge terrace. The house on the property was built originally as a doctor’s residence and surgery for Dr. J. C. Palmer, a wellknown Christchurch doctor.
