CHESS

Sir.—lt is gratifying to note that Mr R G. Wade, the New Zealand champion, is doing so well in the Australasian all-champions chess tournament, in Sydney. This is the strongest "field” ever to meet in the Southern Hemisphere. It is mpt generally knoivn that New Zealand is one of the chess-minded countries, having a higher proportionate number of organised chess players than any of the other English-speaking countries. and in the correspondence branch of the game, it is believed that with the exception of Russia, New Zealand has the highest number, in relation to population, of any country in the world. For 1200 years or more, chess has been played by kings, queens, bishops, baronets, and “peons, and is gaining in popularity with those who find pleasure in mental exercise. -Yours, etc.. EOOK . Rakaia, Sept. 17, 1945.
