HOUSING STANDARD IN CHRISTCHURCH
■ ♦ “IMPROVEMENT NEEDED IN PARTS ” (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. September 20. Information from the 1936-37 survey into housing was quoted by Mr T. H. McCombs (Government, Lyttelton) in the House of Representatives to-day. He said that the survey showed that there were 53,868 houses without proper amenities for the occupants. In general, the standard of housing was not as good as members would like. Mr McCombs displayed a series of illustrations published in "The Press” showing sub-standard areas in Christchurch. Miss M. B. Howard (Government, Christchurch East): Where are they? Mr McCombs: The honourable member is looking at me as though they were in her electorate. Mr McCombs said.the residents liked to think Christchurch was the garden city of New Zealand, but parts needed improvement. No city could be proud of the houses illustrated in “The Press,” and he was sure Christchurch would be among the first to do what it could.
