GOOD RUN OF WHITEBAIT
* CONSIGNMENT FOR CANTERBURY TO-DAY From Oui Own Keporter GREYMOUTH, September 19. The first big consignment of the season of whitebait from the West Coast Province will reach the Canterbury market to-morrow morning. A total of five and a half tons were railed from the South Westland area by tonight’s goods train. This comprises mainly the output of a large number of fishermen engaged in South Westland streams, whose catches were either sent to Hokitika to-day by road services or aeroplanes operated by Air Travel (N.Z.), Ltd., Hokitika, one of which company’s planes made three special trips to-day to Paringa. The remainder of the consignment comprised catches at Teremakau, Hokitika, and nearer south rivers to Hokitika, which made the goods train connexion by road transport service. The catches generally were moderate in the Grey river, though one party secured more than two kerosene this full. The improved weather of the last few days, and the settling down of the heavy seas have resulted in a run of whitebait, and a good season may yet be experienced. Good Catches at Westport Another good run of whitebait was experienced yesterday in the Duller and Orowaiti rivers and in the smaller itreams in the Duller district, fishermen in some places securing more than one kerosene tin full each. The weather was fine and warm, and the rivers and streams were in good fishing condition. On Tuesday the fish dealers were paying 2s 6d a pint for the fish, which was later sold over the counters for ss. Yesterday the price ruling on the waterfront was 3s a pint. It is expected that the-price will be lower to-day if the run keeps up.
