Two Engagements The Nightly gelding Patu Ra has been left in the Sumner Hack Handicap and the Spreydon Hurdles. Early intentions were to start him in the hurdle racd, and was hoped to give him some schooling vesterday, but this was out of the question As there was a chance that it would not be possible to Jump him before Saturday, he was paid up for in his flat engagement as well. In Heavy Ground Several of the candidates in the Islington Handicap have proved their worth on soft ground, these Including Platform, Toxhaven, Lord Darnley,’ Trlng, Ganges, and Alpine. Ganges won his last race in hack company in heavy going at Trentham last month, and earlier In the day T«rd Darnlev was unlucky to be beaten hv Flying Tor in the Parliamentary Handicap over a mile and three furlongs. Below Expectations Edward has been accepted for in both the Hunt Cup and Lincoln Steeplechases. He gained third money in the Enfield Steeplechase last week, but was a long way back from the second horse, Red Glare He will meet the latter on 31b better terms; but that is not likely to bring them much closer together. At one stage of his early education. Edward promised to develop into a good-class steeplechaser, but although he has not been raced to any great extent, he has been disappointing. May Make Amentia

Steward did not suffer any til effects from his early fall In the Grand National Steeplechase, and will be a comparatively fresh horse in the Lincoln Steeplechase. He gave dashing displays in his two races at Wingatul. both in soft going, and his mistake last Saturday was the first he has made with the colours up. His second attempt over the Riccarton country will therefore be watched with interest.

First Appearance* There will be several fresh horses racing at Riccarton on Saturday, Including Hughsotis, Patu Ra, Ringscarf, Lady Chips, Sherwood Forest, Miss Myra, Receptive, Haughty Lad. Comic Paper, Albino, Whitley Master Robin. Runaway, The Crofter, Bath Slipper, Strip, Betterman, Sandy Cape. Full Pitch, Foxhaven. Ganges, Alpine Sir Saladia, Lance Wing, Whackie, and Dash o' Dink. A Likely Favourite Interest will be centred on Master Robin in the Woolston Hack Handicap on Saturday. He is a solidly-built three-year-old colt by Robin Goodfellow from Lady Fox (half-sister to Gay Blonde) by Foxbrldge from Lady Marie, by Romeo, and cost his present owner, Mr P. Louis (Wellington), 1100 guineas as a yearling at Trentham. Master Robin won the Trial Plate, six furlongs, at the recent Wellington meeting, beating Arco and Lady Chips. This win made him ineligible for the Cashmere Plate. Master Robin had a big lead nearing home in the Trentham race, but was all out at the post to wip. and could not have carried on much further. The time for the, race, Imin 26Jsec, gave an indication of the condition of the track.

TROTTING NOTES

Inow at Mctnven _ , A fall of snow at Methven on Tuesday night has further complicated the difficulties of the trainers in the district, and all work is being done on the roads. O. E. Hooper, who trains a team at Lauriston, has arrived at Addington; but after three days' rain Christchurch conditions • make track work a hopeless proposition. • At Oamaru _ With his tracks out of order, the Prebblcton trainer, V. Leeming. has been at Oamaru for some days with his team, which ’ includes Integrity and Festivity. The latter paraded only six times last season, and had two wins, a third, and two fourth placings. Her next appearance will be In tilt Speedway Handicap at Addington, and. a quick beginner, she should ba wall placed early front the 36 yard* rat rfc. At her last start she led all the way te win the Selwyn Handicap from Watcher at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting in January. Good Field The Islington Handicap has drawn a goad field of Improving pacers. With three wins and a second placing in five Starts to his credit since joining the Donald stable. Loyal. CMef will be in demand: and off the 12 yards mark he must be given a great chance. His -unplaced performance was at the Ashburton meeting on June 4; but this form can be discounted, as he was asked to Jive a start of 48 yards to a big field. The difficult task he was set Is Illustrated by (he fact that Emulous, off scratch, registered 3min 2jsec. on $ track which was good but not fast. w New Association

A Country Trotting Clubs’ Association has been formed. Mr E. G. Dobson, president of the Manawatu Trotting Club, Is president, and Mr A. H. Manson, Palmerston North, is secretary. The association was formed as the outcome of an infor- • tnal meeting of delegates representing principally the country clubs at the recent annual meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. A similar body, representative of the country racing clubs, operated for many years, but it has not functioned for several seasons. After Three Seasons Distributor, which has not raced since the 1941-42 season, has been nominated for the Speedway Handicap at Addington. His last win was at Auckland m December. 1941, when he won the Summer Handicap from Munga Tangi. He was trained for that race by C. S. Donald and driven by R. Donald. Trained at Methven Two seasons ago Catalpa was hailed as a coming Cup horse, but he appeared to lose form and did not win a race last term. But his owner-trainer. M. C. McTigue. keeps him in work, and this is sufficient indication that the Jack Potts gelding shows some promise on the home .track. Wild Child, his dam, was bred by W. Kerr at New Brighton, and her other winners include Royal Parade, Streamline, and Sure Potts. Could Trot Fast Safari, a mare by U Scott from Pauline Wrack, has not started since the 1942-43 season, when she won two races for her owner-trainer, L. F. Berkett. At her last start she won the Palmer Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting in April, 1943, from Diana Wild and Parfaite. Safari is on the 12 yards mark, in the Intermediate Handicap, and her effort will be watched with interest.

On Her Home Track Sure Lady has not had many opportunities to race at Addington, but J. Young has made several successful trips to Auckland with her. The Quite Sure mare Is well placed off the front of the Stewards’ Handicap, and what beats her should win. She is from Dorothy Dell, which was by Silk Thread from Dell, by Nelson Bingen from Glade, by Logan Pointer from Mcrce, by Galindo.

Lillie Recent Form . Zingarrie, an aged gelding by Jack Potts from Zara, is now trained by G. S. South at Addington, and he will make his reappearance in the Heathcote Handicap, lie was produced on only three occasions last season, and has not raced since the New Brighton Trotting Clubs meeting in October. His dam, Zara, Is by Wildwood Jua., from Daphne Dillon, and she left a smart pacer in Zincali, which took a record of 3min 10 3-sscc for a mile and a hail.

Good Record In 14 starts last season, Characteristic was only twice out of the money, and eerned £1414 for Mr J. Henderson. By J'-’.ck Potts from a Logan Pointer mare, she is at home over all distances, and •>he should be prominent in the Heathrots Handicap at Addington.

Trained at Leeston The Quite Sure gelding Elation Will hytke his first appearance since entering W ■ Doyle's stable in the Islington Handicap. Elation was a winner at the Wyndhant Trotting Club’s meeting in March, where he defeated Understudy by two lengths in the Edendale Handicap.

At Recfton Dr. J. L, Wicken, ot Reefton. recently purchased a gelding by Lusty Volo from nn Audubon innre. The gelding, which is trained by B. Parkinson, is a halfbrother to Syntax. From Hamilton Ann Scou, which is trained at Hamilton by W. Natr.ke. will make her first appearance at Addington in the Islington Handicap. Driven by A. Broughton, she has won two laces this year, and on each occasion she lias returned substantial dividend:. She was bred by Messrs W. J. Qinrke and J. c. South, Winchester, and is by U. Scott from Ann Parrish, which was by Guy Parrish from Ingle Bingen, by Neison Bingen from the Neernut mare Neeratte.
