MONARCHY IN JUGOSLAVIA
BROZ ASKS FOR ABOLITION TRIALS OF CHETNIKS FOR TREASON LONDON. August 7. Marshal Broz, in the Jugoslav Parliament, to-day demanded the abolition of the monarchy. He said that the question had been held over pending the defeat of Germany, and he declared that a decision could now be reached. He said that during the war King Peter’s name hsd been associated with the' Chetnik leader (General Mikhailovic). . ... The King, whenever there had been large-scale attacks by the Chetnika against the Partisans, had always decorated the Chetnik leaders, said Marshal Broz. It was for those reasons that the National Liberation Council did not. allow King Peter to return to Jugosalvia in 1943. It was now Obvious that the Monarchy was incompatible with the new form of government ' which was being developed -In Jugo- v slavia. The Monarchy would inevitably tend to try to .overthrow the new democratic institutions, and therefore the mass of Jugoslavs were openly .republican. * V Marshal Broz recently offered a reward for the capture of General Mikhailovic.'dead or alive. t
Twenty-five members of the former Jugoslav Chetnik army, which was led by General Mikhsilovic, are on trial for treason in Belgrade. The prosecutor alleged that terrorist bands were organised in' Germany and sent to Jugoslavia tb join General Mikhailovic’s forces. After the German invasion of 1941 they were used to assist the Germans in attacks on the partisan movement led by Marshal Broz. The prosecutor also alleged that the Chetniks sent information to Germany about Bulgarian and Soviet troop strengths and movements. He demanded the death sentence for those found guilty of treason and collaboration with the Germans. DEMOBILISATION OF GERMANS ACTION IN BRITISH ZONE (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON. August 7. It is officially announced that 717.000 Germans have so far been demobilised in the British zone. The releases include 400.000 farm workers, and also miners, food, transport, and administration workers, postal employees, and policemen. German Destroyers at Boston—With the Swastika flying beneath the Stars and Stripes, two German destroyers, manned by volunteer German crew*: under American supervision, nave rived in Boston harbour.
