LAVAL LEAVES SPAIN It is reported from Barcelona that Pierre Laval, accompanied by his wife, has left Spain by ■aeroplane for an undisclosed destination. A scmi-i/llicial statement said Laval had not left of his own free will, but had been formally invited by the Spanish Government to leave the country. This was in accordance with the Government's decision not to harbour political refugees.—London, July 31. BURMA CAMPAIGN Japanese losses In fighting in the Sittang river area of lower Burma now total more than 6000 killed and 600 prisoners. A communique issued by South-east Asia Command says that the main fighting has been near Pyu, about 120 miles from Rangoon. Allied troops made attacks on two Japanese-held villages. One of them was cleared, and Indian troops who attacked the other killed many of the enemy garrison.—London, July SI.
