OBITUARY

DR. ST. L. H. GRIBBEN Dr. St. Leger Hugh Gribben, a recognised authority on mental diseases, and formerly a well-known resident of Christchurch, died at his home in Hamilton recently after an illness of more than 12 months. He was 68 years old. Dr. Gribben was born in Hokitika, the only son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Gribben, pioneer settlers of the West Coast. He received his secondary education in Wellington and studied for his profession at Edinburgh University. From there he went to South Africa, to serve in the Boer War, and later continued post-graduate study in ' mental diseases in England for some years before he returned to New Zealand. In the Dominio-’ he was in charge of different mental hospitals, and was for many years medical superintendent at Sunnyside. He was also keenly interested in the scientific Bide of reformatory work and on the treatment of criminals. Some years ago he retired from hospital work, and entered private practice as an alienist in Hamilton. During the last few years, although he ■was in failing health, he gave much assistance to military medical boards Dr. Gribben was regarded as an expert on agriculture, and had a remarkable fund of accurate knowledge on farm and racing stock. He was keenly interested in racing, hunting, ?nd polo He was formerly president of the Waikato branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He is survived by his wife and two lons. JUDGE C. E. MACCORMICK (PA.) AUCKLAND, July 30. Judge Charles Edward MacCormick collapsed and died at Auckland this morning. Brigadier Kenneth MacCormick, formerly Director of Medical Services with the New Zealand Division in the Middle East, is a son. Judge MacCormick was aged 83. He was Acting-Resident Commissioner of the Cook Islands in 1912. and for some time was a judge of the Native Land - Court in New Zealand.
