DIRECTIONS TO INDUSTRY
f REGULATIONS MAY BE REVOKED INDICATION BY CHAIRMAN OF APPEAL COMMITTEE (P.A.) WANGANUI, July 30. An indicatien that the Industrial Manpower Emergency Regulations, 1944, may be revoked at any time was given by the chairman of the No. 2 Wellington District Industrial Manpower Appeal Committee, Mr F, D. Cornwell, at a sitting in Wanganui today. Mr Cornwell said that any direction made by the committee was not permanent, but wrs only until such time as the regulations were cancelled The case before the committee was that of a girl aged 19 whose mother appealed against the direction of her daughter to a factory on the ground that the girl was about to sit for an examination in music, and was required to practise five hours each day. In reply to Mr Cornwell the mother said that she would prefer her daughter to continue with music after sit : ting for the examination, particularly as her future csreer was involved, The chairman said a direction by the committee to essential industry would not affect any young person’s career. It was expected that the regulations would be revoked at any time. Short City Council Meetilng For the first time for several years (he Christchurch City Council concluded its business last evening before 9 o’clock. All the formal business and committee reports were passed by 8.20 o’clock: but questions and a discussion on an ice-skating rink proposal as a city amenity occupied the council for a further 30 minutes.
