700 ACRES OF LAND PREPARED FOR IRRIGATION
—. Atotal of 700 acres on 30 farms in, the Winchmore, Lyndhurst, and Lauriston districts were prepared for irrigation under the border dyke system by the Wotks Department last season, the total average cost of the work to the fanners being £2 I6S 8d an acre. On land where the department ■constructed and Installed the bead gates on the supply races the cost averaged £3 16s an acre. Applications have already been received for a similar area to be prepared for irrigation next season, and when that has been completed about half the farmers in the districts served by the scheme will have irrigated areas on their farms Of the area prepared last season 656 acres have been sown down in permanent pastures, 54 in lucerne. .16 in wheat and grass, mid four in grass temporarily.
