BERLIN VICTORY PARADE

♦ NO REPRESENTATIVES OF BOMBER COMMAND (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 28. “Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Harris has sent a strongly worded protest to the Air Council, expressing surprise and disappointment that no representatives of Bomber Command were invited to the British victory parade in Berlin,” says the aviation correspondent of the “Sunday Express.” “Air Chief Marshal Harris, in the absence of an official invitation, is not likely to visit Berlin to see the damage his bomber crews have wrought.” OCCUPATION OF VIENNA FIRST ALLIED TROOPS MOVE IN (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, July 28. “Small British and American units have moved into Vienna in the first phase of the joint occupation of the city by British, American, Russian and French forces,” says a correspondent of the associated Press in Austria. “The entrance of the complete garrison forces has been delayed by negotiations on a high level. Some .details have been agreed on. The Americans say that the Russians are co-operating whole-heartedly. It is believed that final agreement will result from a meeting of the four Allied commanders. “It is expected that the occupation plans will be similar to those for Berlin, each occupying power holding the chairmanship of a joint, commission for a month. The Russians are at present handling all arrangements for the supply of food to the population.” ALLIED CONTROL OF BERLIN “ FIRST PHASE OVER” LONDON, July 27. An officer of the American Military Government in Berlin to-day* told a correspondent that the first phase of the occupation of the city was over and that the second phase was beginning. At the outset, the Allies had had; to overcome suspicions, but all problems between them had now been settled, and they were now gaining the confidence of the German civilian population. The chairmanship of the Kommandature was held by a representative or each of the Allied countries in turn, and the Kommandature dealt directly with the German Lord Mayor in the city. The minimum of food and fuel was being brought into the city, and it would be issued as needed to maintain health. Both the Allied and German police forces had tackled the black market, and it was not expected to become a serious menace. The German police alone had arrested 2000 black markct traders No serious act of sabotage had been reported in the British zone in the last three months. The original Werewolf organisation had been smashed and there were no signs of a new organisation to take its place. “The German Werewolf movement no longer exists. A statement to this effect was made to-day at the 21st Army Group Headquarters,” says a correspondent. “The original Werewolf movement is smashed. Any further outbreaks of planned and clandestine sabotage or assassinations would be fruits of a new movement, of whose existence there is as yet no evidence. The Germans handed in 126,191 arms to authorities of the British Military Government during the amnesty week, which ended on July 15.
