At a recent meeting of the Sefton- : Kowai Women’s Institute, motions of ' sympathy were passed with members of the Petrie family, Mrs Maguire, and Mrs Rowe in their bereavements. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr L. J. Gillespie, who was for many years a member of the Post and Telegraph Department, was passed at a recent meeting of the North Canterbury Post and Telegraph Women’s Association. The staff of J. Ballantyne and Company, Ltd., served tea for 120 servicemen at the Y.M.C.A. yesterday. The hostess was Mrs E. Early. Sleeping accommodation was provided for 245 men during the week-end. The Sunday, evening concert programme was arranged by Messrs P.. Stringer and H. Crawford. Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the Mayoress (Miss E. C. Couzins) were passed at recent meetings of the North Canterbury Post and Telegraph Women’s Association and of the Home Economics Association, ‘‘The Use of the Bible in Sunday School” was the subject of an address given by Mr H. W. Beaumont at a recent meeting of • the Christchurch branch of the Presbyterian Sunday School Teachers’ Union. The pre|ident (Mr G. Hicks) presided. About 700 servicemen were entertained at the Welcome Club during the week-end. The Friends of St. Helens provided and served afternoon tea and tea on Saturday. Supper was served by the V.A.D. Transport Section of the Red Cross Society. On Sunday afternoon tea, tea, and supper were provided and served by members of the Townswomen’s Guild. The Sunday evening concert programme was presented by the Burnham Band, assisted by several leading city entertainers. In the absence of the president (Mrs R. A. Ambridge) Miss S. McKee presided at the monthly meeting of the Home Economics Association. Demonstrations in handcraft were given by Mesdames Turner, Kellaway. Samuels, and Miss Caygill. Mrs B. E. Menzies was in charge of a bring nd buy table. Members were asked to assist at the flag day street appeal for the Mayoress’s Parcels Fund, to be held next month.
A successful mannequin parade, arranged by Mrs T. Firmin, of the staff of Hay’s, Ltd., was held in the Kilwinning Lodge, Lyttelton, on Saturday afternoon in aid of the Lyttelton Plunket Society. There was a very large attendance. Lyttelton residents who acted as mannequins included Misses Beverley Gilmore, Noeline Bisman, Lorna Dyne, Hilary Mahar. Dorothy Hendry. Mesdames I. Newton. E. H. Green,' C. Barnes. Songs were given by Mrs F. Bovce and by Misses N. Bisman and A, Gilmore.
