Surrender Demands To Be Explained

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 8. The United States is about to open a big propaganda campaign directed at Japan, showing just what unconditional surrender does and does not mean. According to the “Christian Science Monitor” Japan will be told that unconditional surrender, which will be based on the pattern adopted for Germany, means disarming and disbanding all the armed forces; the dissolution for all time of the Japanese General Staff; the removal, or destruction, of all Japanese military equipment; the elimination, or control of, ah Japanese industry which can be used for military production; the punishment of war criminals; reparations for destruction caused in the Pacific; the wiping out of all repressive legislation, organisations, and institutions imposed on the Japanese people by the military clique; and the removal of all militarist influences from the public, cultural, and economic life of Japan. The Japanese people will be told that unconditional surrender does not mean their destruction or wholesale punishment. ‘ ,
