SUGAR BEET

Sir—Your New Brighton correspondent evidently does not know that sugar beet has been grown in Canterbury for the last 40 years in small areas; and before the war the Department of Agriculture grew some fairsized areas in South Canterbury. Sugar beet grows quite well in the province, and if the people are willing to pay 8d a pound for their sugar, an industry could be established; but Ido not think it would be popular either with the farmer or the consumer There is abundance of sugar in Australia and Fiji, and the shortage referred to took place in Melbourne, not because of sugar shortage, but because of three strikes in three weeks. — WIIIT*Q Ptf* July 4. 1945.
