TYRE AND PETROL PRICES
* INFORMATION SOUGHT . (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. July 4. Opposition members sought information on tyre and petrol prices in the House of Representatives to-day. Drawing attention to recent newspaper reports, they said the prices appeared to be too high, and asked the Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) to make statements oh the position. . Mr G. F. Sim (Opposition. Rotorua), Mr W. Sullivan (Opposition, Bay of Plenty), and Mr A. S. Sutherland (Opposition, Hauraki) gave notice to ask : the Minister of Supply whether he had seen a report that the Government obtained a profit of 3d a gallon on all petrol, in addition to the tax, which amounted to 14d a gallon. “Which , account benefits from this extra charge?” they asked, "and is this the forerunner of a system of imposing on the people a hidden form of taxation? In view of the direct profit taken by the Government from lend-lease pf £3,125,000 for the years 1941-44, is it not possible to give some reduction in price to the public?" Mr W. Sullivan and Mr Sim also gave notice to ask the same Minister for a full statement on the disparity of tyre prices between Australia and New Zealand.
