VICE-REGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 4. The Governor-General presided at a meeting of the Executive Council this morning. Later, at Government House, his Excellency received Captain W. Vaumund, superintendent of the Norwegian Shipping and Trade Mission. Subsequently his Excellency received the chief of the naval staff, Commodore Sir Atwell Lake, R.N, A gathering of between 500 and 600 European and Maori residents of the East Coast honoured Sir Apirana Ngata on the occasion of his seventy-first birthday at a social at Ruatoria. Responding to appeals to him to renew political activities, Sir Apirana Ngata declined, and said that only if the electorate failed to produce a younger man, qualified by education, personality and absolute honesty of outlook, would he return to the political field. -(P.A.) ‘ . Appreciation of the services of the former clerk of the House of Representatives (Mr T. D. H. Hall) was recorded by the House yesterday. The Acting-Leader of the House (the Hon. W Nash), the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland), and the Speaker (the Hon. F. W. Schramm) paid tributes to the ability and integrity of Mr Hall. Afterwards an antique silver teapot was presented to Mr Hall at a farewell gathering in the members’ lounge.—(F.O.P.R.)
