TUESDAY (Before Mr Raymond Femer, S.M.) DESERTION Herbert Walter Green, aged 48, a ship’s patrolman, pleaded guilty to a charge of deserting from an, overseas ship at Lyttelton, and was sentenced ■, to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. Senior-Sergeant J, Abel, who prosecuted, said that Green had signed on the ship at Liverpool. Since deserting he had been working In toe country, and was not arrested until Monday evening. Green said he had been ill, and had seen the ship’s doctor, but, being/dissatisfied with toe doctor’s refusal to put him ashore, had deserted to get medical treatment, 1 TRAFFIC OFFENCES Offenders prosecuted by toe Transport Department were dealt with as- follows: No heavy traffic licence; David Clinton, fined £1 13s. Failing to carry goods services vehicle authority: Farrier and Company, Ltd., fined 10s, Exceeding 40 miles an hour: Maurice Leslie Griffiths, fined £5. Exceeding 30 miles an hour: James Scott Dawson, fined 30s; Donald Munro Mackay, fined 30s. Incorrect number plates; Charles Clifford limes, fined 30s (unlicensed trailer, fined ;Soa).- Driving motor-cycle without licence: Malcolm' Herbert Pearce, fined 20s. Cases brought by toe Christchurch CityCouncil, Traffic Department were dealt with as follows :-r-Cycling at night without lights: Jack Beckett, Clarence Allan Boskell, Lawrence David Coles. Leslie David Dawson, Richard H. Gibson, Albert Joseph Hton, Arthur James Mac Donald, Silas Gordon McAlistef, Louis Kohloff, Ernest Storer, Ernest Melville Summerfield, Norman Jack Tucker, Ray Watts, Henry Frank Wright, and Maurice. Edward Yardley, each fined 10s; Ralph' Keith Wilkins, fined 10s (giving false name and address, fined 30s); Lister Keith Hills, fined 10s (cycling on footpath; ordered to pay costs only); John Alexander Dempsey, ordered to pay costs only. No warrant of fitness: Robert Flower, lan Gough, Charles A. Ogllvle,, Elizabeth O'Shea,, William A. Pope, George Stewart, and Cecil Wildbore, each fined 10s. Insufficient lights: Wilbur S. Handlsldes,. fined 20s. Incorrect parking: ; Sybil D. Russell, fined 10s; John Henry ordered to pay costs, only. Obstructing fire plug: Marguerite L. Rhodes, 10s. Exceeding 30 miles an hour; Norman Wong; fined £2. Passing stationary tram; Henry Onslow Jarvis, fined 20s. Failing to remove Jagged material from road: Benjamin H. C. Rumble, fined £2.
