SOLDIER SENTENCED
DETENTION FOR SEVEN MONTHS
A sentence of seven months’ detention for desertion has been passed on Private John Gilbert Ellery by a court-mar-tial which sat at Burnham on June 14. Ellery had pleaded not guilty to a charge of desertion in that, at Blenheim on September 5, 1942, he absented himself without leave from the Ist Nelson-Marl-borough-West Ccast Regiment until he was arrested on May 16, 1945, at Auckland in civilian clothes. Evidence called by the prosecutor at the hearing showed that Ellery, who was about 19 years of age at the time, left the Delta Camp on September 5, 1942, and joined the Merchant Navy under the assumed name of William Longstaff, and served in several ships, from each of which he had been given a good discharge. A verdict of guilty was also returned on a second charge, that of losing by neglect clothing and equipment valued at £7 11s. On this count Ellery was ordered to be put under stoppages of pay until he had made good the value of the articles lost.
