A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. S. Barnett, a former member of Hhe Christchurch City Council, was passed at a meeting of the Hepthcote County Council last evening. One of New Zealand’s best-known pilots, Wing Commander W. V. Craw-ford-Compton, D.S.O. and bar, D.F.C. and bar, will leave Auckland for England on Sunday by air after spending about a month’s furlough in New Zealand. It was announced this week that Wing Commander CrawfordCornpton had been awarded a permanent commission in the Royal Air Force, and he is returning to England to attend a Staff College course of about six to nine months. He will then be posted for further duty.— (P.A.) - Motions of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. S. Barnett (chairman of the Christchurch South Intermediate School), Mr W. S. Kerr (chairman of the Ashburton East School Committee),’ and Mr G. N. Ormandy, a former headmaster of the Linwood Avenue School, were passed by the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. Officers were elected as follows at the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Bible-in-Schools League; president, Archbishop West-Watson; chairman, Mr H. A. H. Insull; deputychairman, Canon G. Nelham Watson; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. GWright; general committee, the Rev. W. H. Greenslade, Canon A. H. Norris, the Rev. Dr. D. O. Williams, the Rev. A. D. Robertson, the Rev. H. L. Wilkinson, the Rev. L. A. D. Hayman, the Rev. H. W. Payne, the Rev. W. M. Garner, Brigadier S. Bridge, Mr J. B. Mcßride. Mr A. R. Jordan, the Rev. C. Tanner, the Rev. J. S. Strang, Deaconess O. Ault, Archdeacon A. C. Purchas. the Rev. D. Thorpe, the Rev. W. A. Orange, the Rev. A. Conway, and Mr T. N. Gibbs.
