RIFLE SHOOTING
“ THE PRESS ” CHALLENGE SHIELD
PRESENTATION TO CHRIST’S COLLEGE “I congratulate the College on winning the shield for the first occaslpn, and I hope it will not be the last,” said Colonel A. Bongard, Area 10 Commander, when he presented “The Press” Challenge Shield to Christ's College yesterday afternoon. The shield, which was given in 1907 by the Christchurch Press Company. Ltd., tor annual competition between ride shcoting teams from cadets of South Island schools, was won. by the Christ’s College team last year. There was a similar competition in the North Island, and the team with the highest average earned a cash prize of £lO for its school, said Colonel Bongard. Last year the North Island team had won the prize with an average of 85.3, but the Christ’s College average had been only one point lower. Medals will later be presented to individual members of the team, said Colonel Bongard, but it should be remembered that it was the team spirit that counted. Colonel Bongard apologised for the absence of the Officer Commanding the Southern Military District (Brigadier E. T. Rowlllngs), who had sent his congratulations to the school. 1 The school cadet company marched past while the school band played, and Colonel Bongard took the salute. He was accompanied by Major B. H. Tosswill, Area Staff' Officer, and Captain A. Molineaux, Area Staff Officer, Training. Members of the team were:—Sergeant E. C. Latter, Corporal G. L. Richards, Lance-Corporal R. E. Gordon, Cadets J. H. Hope, A. L. Tapley. G. G. Coull, W. M. Mac Donald. J. R. Wilson, E. B, Hindmarsh. and R. T. Brebner.
